Safe Amalgam (Mercury) Filling Removal

Posted on March 30, 2010 at 2:04 AM

La Jolla Center for Holistic Dentistry often receives the following phone calls: "Do you remove amalgam fillings safely?".... "Do you follow IAOMT protocol (International Academy of Oral medicine and Toxicology)?" The answer is YES We Do!!!

The following steps are our safe amalgam filling removal protocol----

1. We use Mercury Vapor Ionizer which removes mercury vapor in the air prevents patient from inhaling those harmful mercury vapor into their mouth then entering into their body.

2. We also have a professional grade air filter to further filter residual mercury vapor circulating in the room.

3. We let patient breathe the medical grade oxygen from a nose piece. So patient does not inhale the mercury vapor in the air back into their body.

4. We use Rubber Dam---a thin layer of rubber cloth--to isolate the tooth being worked on from the rest of teeth. The robber dam catches whatever small particle of amalgam or amalgam powders coming out from drilling. It prevents those amalgam powders from contacting the oral mucosa or gum. Thus running no risk of those amalgam powders being reabsorbed back into the body from oral mucosa.

5. We use very powerful suction and our assistants are knowledgable of and very aware of mercury toxicity issues. The suction tube is being hold as close to the tooth as possible to catch all amalgam pieces and powders.
